Happy March!

I'm having an eventful month, and April is shaping up to be even more so. So there's a lot of event planning going on around here. I did get a chance to hike a bit in Seattle, which was a nice break from the spreadsheets and flyers ...

In other news, was on a podcast, talking to Mike Czerniewski about public transit. We need to be troubleshooting and maintaining the transit system so more people can use it.

The Neighborhood Watch (a short film)

I co-wrote and co-directed a short film, and we're premiering it in Long Beach on April 1.

A gripping tale of four dysfunctional members of a neighborhood watch as they try to solve a crime terrorizing their town. Or something.

Or catch it virtually here.

South Bay LA Climate Events

Here's a guide I helped make, to local LA climate events. They're a fun way to get out of the house and meet the climate community.

(Not in LA? I'm working on a tool to help you find a similar guide in your city! Let me know if you're interested and where you are.)

Corners on Fruit

Pomegranates are fascinating, the more you look at them.

Pomegranates are not quite round. They have corners.

I noticed it when I set myself a challenge to draw a ‘plant’ every day, and decided fruits would count as plants.

In the Works

I'm working on plans for Earth Day and LA Climate Week. And making slow progress on Land's Grudge, my sequel to Fire's Ally. This is my favorite part of the process, making lots of notes, diagrams, and worldbuilding entries.

So those are some of the things going on! Hope you're having a good March.

Best wishes,

-Deepti

P.S. I'm starting to send these round-ups more regularly. You can find all recent newsletters here, so feel free to delete them from your inbox if the file sizes get big.

Art & Writing from D. Kannapan February 2026 A vacation sketch from Estes Park near Boulder, CO (You're receiving this email because you subscribed to my work, via one of several platforms including Medium and Luma. You can unsubscribe at any time.) Happy February! My year's off to a pleasant, outdoorsy start. A highlight was going on a nature walk in a marsh with my local League of Women Voters (Torrance Area). Between us, we saw a Say's phoebe, a black phoebe, a grackle, two Cassin's...

Art & Writing from D. Kannapan January 2026 The three "nature girl" ink drawings I made Happy January! Hope you are having a good start to the year. I started mine with some video editing. I made a long video review (with spoilers) of the movie Wake Up Dead Man. In short, I thought it was very good. That was a good chance to dust off my editing skills, just in time for editing a short film I made with my friends. More about that soon! In other news, my book, Fire's Ally, is now available for...

Art & Writing from D. Kannapan December 2025 An illustration from my TEDx talk about climate action. Happy December! I'm just coming off of 10 delightful days of drawing mammals. Bunnies, dogs, prairie dogs, and more. It was good practice for my art skills, a chance to go through my old photos, and an excuse to zoom in on cute little furry faces. You can check out the gallery of all the art I made here. And to top that off, here is a selection of my other art and writing you may have missed....
