January 2026

Happy January!

Hope you are having a good start to the year. I started mine with some video editing. I made a long video review (with spoilers) of the movie Wake Up Dead Man. In short, I thought it was very good.

That was a good chance to dust off my editing skills, just in time for editing a short film I made with my friends. More about that soon!

In other news, my book, Fire's Ally, is now available for purchase in ebook and print.

I Used Art to Unstick My Novel Project

Throwback to a 2023 update from writing Fire's Ally:

I’ve been working on a fantasy novel for a couple of years now, and I tend to work on it in sprints between other, shorter projects. In December 2022, I cleared my schedule to work on my novel for a month. I was on my second draft and I hadn’t looked at it for a few months, which made the prospect of starting up again intimidating. After pondering over my next course of action, I arrived at my favorite solution to creative blocks: an art challenge.

“Nature Girl” Ink Drawings — Incorporating Characters into Landscapes

An experiment comes together from spare hemp paper and a dream!

One type of drawing I never thought of doing was combining a character and a landscape. It just never occurred to me, and felt kind of incongruous. I couldn’t get the character and landscape to match in tone, so they’d feel like parts of the same picture.

Understanding Time Poverty Is Key in Addressing Climate Change

Recently, I’ve been noticing that the more sustainable/climate-conscious lifestyle option in our existing society is often the slower one. This means that ‘busyness’ or time poverty is a major barrier to the adoption of behavior changes to address climate change.

In the Works

The video-editing marathon continued. I have a couple more YouTube videos I'm working on.

Most excitingly of all, I'm starting work on writing the sequel to Fire's Ally! It's a long process, and this is one of the absolutely best parts: when I'm tinkering with my notes and making the storylines come together.

And here's a title reveal: Book 2 is called Land's Grudge.

Best wishes,

--Deepti

Art & Writing from D. Kannapan December 2025 An illustration from my TEDx talk about climate action. Happy December! I'm just coming off of 10 delightful days of drawing mammals. Bunnies, dogs, prairie dogs, and more. It was good practice for my art skills, a chance to go through my old photos, and an excuse to zoom in on cute little furry faces. You can check out the gallery of all the art I made here. And to top that off, here is a selection of my other art and writing you may have missed....

Art & Writing from D. Kannapan November 2025 A squirrel I painted at Downtown Torrance Pride Happy November! It’s been a while since I did one of my 10-day drawing challenges. The last one I did was a study of birds. Well, to keep the theme going, I’m going to do mammals this time! it’s broad enough to roll in many of my favorite (or at least important and overdue) things: wildlife photography, cats, organizing my photos, uploading my backlog of nature observations to iNaturalist. It’s also a...
