Happy April!

I've had an action-packed month, organizing and attending events for Earth Month and LA Climate week. I could use some chill creative time.

I worked on writing my next book as a break from all the running around, and frankly, it was my best decision ever. Writing is so much more my forte than event logistics. The event planning was worth it though: always nice to connect with the local climate community.

I only have a handful of work deadlines left to finish out the month. So the end is in sight!

I was on a podcast: The hosts of Somebody Write This and I brainstormed a story about a professional feud, a mystical journey into a volcano, and facing the edges of one's own sanity ... and we gave our story an incomprehensible title. I had a lot of fun with both the conversation and the writing prompt!

Reflecting on Writing Fire's Ally

Article and Video: some thoughts on my experience of getting stuck and unstuck writing Fire's Ally. Now that I'm in the middle of writing its sequel, it's fun to reminisce.

Nature Sketching Exercises

For Earth Day, a small group of neighbors and I had a relaxed afternoon in the park: sketching, chatting, and learning about local conservation efforts.

I made a video with some quick nature sketching exercises you can try!

The Neighborhood Watch (Short Film)

A gripping tale of four dysfunctional members of a neighborhood watch as they try to solve a crime terrorizing their town. Or something.

My friends and I made a short film!

We had a fun little watch party to celebrate its Youtube premier. The video's up now for you to see.

Shoutout to Fammy C for making the movie poster.

In the Works

My short film was actually intended to be a sketch, but things got out of hand. Anyway, my friends and I are now writing our next sketch, about a bunch of health charlatans on a business trip. And this time everything will go exactly according to plan.

I'm also working on some more Youtube videos, a series of video essays. More on that soon.

Hope you're having a good, creative April and May! Catch you soon in my next newsletter.

Best wishes,

--Deepti

P.S. If you are in the LA South Bay and a voter, you may be interested in the candidate forums I helped organize. We heard from candidates for Torrance City Government and for the California State Legislature. Check them out if you're deciding who to vote for!

P.P.S. I'm starting to send these round-ups more regularly. You can find all recent newsletters here, so feel free to delete them from your inbox if the file sizes get big.

Between us, we saw a Say's phoebe, a black phoebe, a grackle, two Cassin's...

Art & Writing from D. Kannapan January 2026 The three "nature girl" ink drawings I made Happy January! Hope you are having a good start to the year. I started mine with some video editing. I made a long video review (with spoilers) of the movie Wake Up Dead Man. In short, I thought it was very good. That was a good chance to dust off my editing skills, just in time for editing a short film I made with my friends. More about that soon! In other news, my book, Fire's Ally, is now available for...
